Cavendish and Wiggins ready to dominate tour

November 1, 2011, 8:53pm

World champion Mark Cavendish believes he and Bradley Wiggins are "like brothers" and is confident they can dominate the Tour de France together at Team Sky.

Much has been made of Cavendish's impending switch to Sky, which will see the reigning Tour sprint king in the same team as Wiggins - who has become accustomed to being the focal point of the team's attack on the general classification each year.

The pair were believed to have a frosty relationship - with Cavendish refusing to speak to his compatriot for a period after the Beijing Olympics, angry at Wiggins who he felt cost him a medal in the two-man Madison event - but Cavendish is now looking forward to a successful partnership, especially after they worked together so effectively at the World Championships in September to propel the Manx rider to road race gold.

"I was the only one who came home without a medal (in 2008), but me and Brad ... we're like brothers," Cavendish told The Mirror. "Sometimes brothers don't talk to each other for a while, they might have a tiff.

"But we're probably closer than ever now because we'll be pushing each other to get results next year for Team Sky on the Tour de France, or Team GB at the Olympics."

Critics have wondered how Team Sky will balance Cavendish's sprint ambitions with Wiggins' general classification hopes but the Manx rider has no fears, adding: "I don't think it's too greedy to aim for Brad being on the podium in Paris in the same race as me winning another Green Jersey. T-Mobile did it in the nineties, and on paper Team Sky are stronger."

Victory at the World Championships in Copenhagen saw the 26-year-old become the first British rider since Tom Simpson in 1965 to claim the fabled rainbow jersey, after being led heroically by Wiggins and David Millar - among others - before unleashing a customary sprint finish.

He believes the manner of the victory was as impressive as the final result, and is certain Team GB have put down a real marker ahead of London 2012.

"It was a three-year plan. We had the best bunch of British riders there has ever been. And the eight guys rode incredibly. We controlled the world champs from start to finish in a way no one had ever seen before," he said.

"Sometimes I ask why it's an individual award. If I could take these bands (on the rainbow jersey) and give the other lads one each I would. It's how it is. But for a British rider, after 46 years, it is an incredible thing.

"We showed the world we can control the championships; not just win, but control how the whole race panned out. That's quite a dominating thing to have. Psychologically, the other teams now know the rules."

Kittel ready to pounce at Jayco Herald Sun Tour

September 27, 2011, 7:18pm

Tour of Spain stage winner Marcel Kittel is one of the world’s fastest sprinters. Already in 2011, the 23-year-old German has won 14 stage races, headlined by his first Grand Tour victory, four of the seven stages of the Tour of Poland, and Belgium’s Kampioenschap van Vlaanderen, winning a bunch sprint from world class riders, including Andrei Greipel and Robbie McEwen.

And he is coming to Australia to lead UCI Professional Continental team Skil-Shimano for the 59thedition of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour, to be held in Victoria from Wednesday 12th to Sunday 16thOctober.

“We have a strong team for the Jayco Herald Sun Tour and I’m convinced that we can win stages there in a sprint, personally, but also from a breakaway and when we have a finish climb like on stage four,” Kittel said.

“I expect a very nice race and an easygoing Australian atmosphere with hopefully nice weather!

“It’s the last race for me this year so I want to enjoy it with my team as much as possible and if there is a sprint I want to win it.”

Kittel, one of the early favourites to claim the sprinter’s jersey, will be returning to familiar territory next month, having won a bronze medal in the under-23 time trial at the UCI Road World Championships in Geelong last year.

“I know the area around Geelong from the world championships last year. I had a really good time there and I spent a few more weeks in Australia for holiday and I saw a lot,” Kittel said.

“I heard that the race will pass a few great Australian signs like the Great Ocean Road and the city of Melbourne and of course there are already some big names on the winners list. I’m very excited and looking forward to it.”

A strong Dutch-based Skil-Shimano team, with a blend of youth and experience, will be supporting Kittel in his bid for stage victories.

Experienced 2010 Tour of Britain top-ten finisher and Australian-based Koen De Kort, will be joined by season debutant Tobias Ludvigsson, promising German climber Simon Geschke, 2011 Tour of Luxembourg young riders jersey winner Alexandre Geniez, and young Victorian Mitchell Docker, who finished 15th in this year’s Paris-Roubaix.

The Jayco Herald Sun Tour will be one of the last races 25-year-old Docker will be riding for Skil-Shimano, after yesterday being announced as the latest rider to join GreenEDGE.

“I’m looking forward to riding with guys like Matt Goss and Simon Clarke, who I rode with and grew up with in the juniors, as well as the guys I’ve always looked up to like Robbie McEwen and Stuart O’Grady,” Docker said.

“It will also be good to work with the staff, who understand the Australian mentality and to be able to speak Aussie slang at the dinner table.

“My time at Skil-Shimano has been great. They gave me so many opportunities and as a young rider they never rushed my development, which will help my career long-term."

The 2011 Jayco Herald Sun Tour will be presented by Jayco and the Herald Sun, along with the continued support from the Victorian Government.  The 59th edition to be held from Wednesday 12 to Sunday 16 October, will visit Whittlesea, Ballarat, Geelong and the Mornington Peninsula before the final stage circuit race on Lygon Street in Melbourne.

Rider quotes from stage 10

July 12, 2011, 2:34pm

Dries Devenyns
"When Gilbert got moving on the last climb I followed him with determination. We got a good lead, but in the lead group not everyone was collaborating. Tony Martin clearly wasn’t cooperating in order to favour Cavendish’s sprint. So I preferred not to force things. In these situations it’s also important to understand if a move will be successful or not. I’m happy, anyway. My legs are spinning really well, even after the rest day. We’ll see in the next few days if there will be any other chances.”

Jerome Pineau Jerome Pineau
Jerome Pineau was involved in a crash that happened about 10 kilometres after the start of the stage. “I couldn’t do anything to avoid the fall. It’s never fun to wipe out, but luckily the consequences weren’t too serious. I just have some scrapes on my left side and knee, but they shouldn’t be a problem.”

Sylvain Chavanel
"Today I finished in the first group. It was hard for me, but the rest day surely helped me a lot. At the moment I still don’t have the energy I need to attack, but I’m hoping that in the next days I won’t have any more troubles and maybe I can try to needle my way ahead of the group.”

Kevin De Weert
"Again today the day went by without problems or falls. I tried to stay out in front to avoid surprises, and also because often after the rest day the legs might not be super.”

It was a hard day for Gerald Ciolek. The team’s German sprinter is suffering from a pimple that makes it uncomfortable for him to stay on his saddle. Gert Steegmans is still experiencing pain in his left wrist; he finished the stage in 149th place at 5.59` from the winner

Yarosolav Popovych out of the Tour de France

July 12, 2011, 5:10am

Yarosolav PopovychJuly 12 Yaroslav Popovych will not take the start of stage 10 in the Tour de France. Since Sunday Popovych has fever. As the rest day didn’t bring any amelioration, the team decided not to let him start in Aurillac. The former Tour de France stage winner will undergo some extra tests today.

In stage five Popovych crashed twice. With a lot of character he survived four more stages. The current illness however makes an end to his Tour de France. Earlier this Tour Team RadioShack lost Jani Brajkovic with collarbone fracture and Chris Horner with severe concussion and nose fracture. Other team leader Levi Leipheimer crashed three times and Andreas Klöden suffers from lower back hematoma and muscle contracture after the big crash in last Sunday’s stage. Klöden will take the start today and hopes for improvement the coming days.

Tour de France Stage 5: Dangerous Day

Cadel Evans avoided a number of crashes that took down several overall contenders at the Tour de France Wednesday as the BMC Racing Team's leader held onto his second place overall.

Stayed In Front

Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank-Sungard), Bradley Wiggins (Sky Pro Cycling) and Robert Gesink (Rabobank) each crashed, but all were able to get up and continue. Evans finished 11th as Mark Cavendish (HTC-Highroad) won the uphill bunch sprint finish on the 164.5-kilometer stage. "It was really windy, with narrow, winding roads," Evans said. "We worked hard to stay in front all day. I just kept hearing on the radio over and over again, 'crash, crash, crash' and sort of kept going, and then I saw Gesink all covered in dirt. It was a dangerous day."

crash, tour de france, stage 5Good Guidance

Evans remains one second behind yellow jersey wearer Thor Hushovd (Garmin-Cervélo) heading into the longest stage (226.5 km) of this year's race. The two-time Tour de France runner-up said he's appreciating the fine teamwork he has received, particularly from Manuel Quinziato and Marcus Burghardt. "They're used to riding the classics and riding in the front all day, and dodging traffic islands is their speciality," Evans said. "I'm very grateful to have them here for that as well as their role in the team."

Team Katusha dominates the Russian Road Champs

June 26, 2011, 5:04pm

team katusha

Katusha Team successfully ended its perfect Russian National Road Championships in Ufa overnight. After a win of Ignatyev and second place of Karpets in the individual time trial, “Katusha” took the whole podium in the road race.

New Russian RR Champion is Pavel Brutt, second place was Eduard Vorganov, while Yuri Trofimov completed the podium.

From the beginning  till the end of the 190km, “Katusha” controlled the peloton and did everything needed for a victory. The most important moment of the race was the solo attack of Pavel Brutt with 30 km to go. Taking just 20 second in the first 2 km of the escape, Brutt had a good advantage during the last 20 kilometers. Finally, Pavel finished alone, taking his first Russian tricolor jersey.
After almost 1 minute Eduard Vorganov and Yuri Trofimov in the sprint, took silver and bronze, respectively.

The race was tough enough for me because of the rain and strong relief. However, the team did a perfect job for me, giving a possibility to attack at the right moment for a victory. For me this is the first title of my career, so I am very happy with it. Especially, I am glad to hold the jersey in “Katusha”. This is important for our Project, - said Pavel Brutt.

Egor Silin, Alexander Kolobnev and Vladimir Gusev completed full dominance of “Katusha Team” in Ufa with their 4th, 5th and 6th positions, respectively
