Aliaksandr Kuchynski brought one more victory to his team “Katusha” this month – he won road race of Belarusian National Championships for second year in a row.

The race, held in Mozyr, was a hard one with a lot of climbs and, consequently, a lot of attacks. Among the most active riders were Aliaksandr Kuchynski and Konstantin Sivtsov from “HTC-Highroad”, 10th at “Giro d’Italia-2011”.

But, finally, a group of four came to finish line. In the sprint, Aliaksandr Kuchynski was the rider who won, taking his second gold medal in a row in Belarus.

“The race was very tough, I think the hardest possible in Belarus. Maybe, the distance was similar of a Belgian race with a lot of short but strong climbs. The main favorite of the race, of course, was Sivtsov, who came after a good 10th place at “Giro”. But, for me this distance suits very much, because I like Belgian races and I can show good results in such races. At the finish a lot of riders attacked, but, finally, in the sprint from a leader’s group I won. I am very glad for this victory, because I hoped to hold the jersey in “Katusha Team” and I did it. Now, I will have some rest and after it, will start to prepare for second part of season” -said Aliaksandr Kuchynski.

Second place in Belarus was Konstantin Sivtsov, while third was Bronislav Samoilau from “Movistar Team”.

McCarthy grabs race lead in Germany

June 14, 2011, 12:29am

Queensland teenager Jay McCarthy timed his sprint to perfection to claim victory in the opening stage of the International Thüringen Tour in Germany.

McCarthy, 18, overtook Germany's Theo Reinhardt on the line to win in a time of 4:11:46 with Michael Koch (GER) close behind in third place. The stage covered a 170 kilometre rolling course out and back from the town of Erfurt finishing with three laps of a seven kilometre circuit.

"There were a few attacks out on the road with riders chasing intermediate and mountain points but the race regrouped before the finishing circuit," said Jayco-AIS Team Director, James Victor. "Past the finish line each time there was a solid 700 metre uphill pitch at around 13 to 15 percent and that split up the peloton.

"Jay and Pat (Lane) both rode into a lead group of around a dozen riders and Pat rode really well over the final kilometre to control the speed in a bid to set Jay up for the finish."

Lane, having done his job for McCarthy, dropped back to finish eleventh, seven seconds behind his winning team mate. The main bunch rode home 21 seconds down.

The result puts McCarthy into the yellow jersey of overall leader. He also tops the points and best young rider classifications.

It's the first victory in Europe for the 2010 Australian junior road race champion who stepped into the U23 ranks this year but struggled early in the season with a niggling knee injury.

Tomorrow's stage is a 22 kilometre team time trial in Streufdorf and Jayco AIS, who won this stage last year, is keen to repeat that result in 2011.

Jay McCarthy Interview: Silver at Junior Worlds Road Race

August 11, 2010, 6:51pm

Q. Jay, congratulations on your silver medal in the men’s road race at Junior Worlds! Can you take us through the last few kilometres of the race?

A. What was left of the main field started playing tactics. I had 2 of the Aussie boys left and Damina Howson rode the front trying to close the last of the gap back to Olivier, becasue other teams were not taking on the chase from the last 5 ks of the race. I then had another team mate Calvin Watson lining me up for the sprint, he was on the front from 500 to go. I slipped into about 5th postion with about 175 to go and I made my dash to line. It was a great team effort.

Q. When Olivier Le Gac had problems with his gears at the end, did you think you could catch him?

A. We were coming fast but not fast enough. Was great ride by Olivier.

Q. Would you say this result is the highlight of your career to date?

A. Yes it is I came 7th last year at junior worlds and I was so happy then to podium and be so close to the win is unreal.

Q. Does this performance give you greater confidence for the rest of the year?

A. It does indeed. I now head to Singapore for the Youth Olympics, this will be my last lot of competition before a much needed break. Then I will prepare for the transition to the u23 ranks.

Q. What does it mean to you to represent your country at the Junior Road World Championships?

A. It is amazing. Not many 17 year old kids in Australia get the chance, we have experienced somthing that I will have for me for life. The help and support we are given by the Australian Cycling Federation is amazing. Everytime I put on the Australain strip I take a moment to think how lucky I am.

Q. What keeps you motivated when you’re in Australia and it’s a cold winter?

A. I do it because I love it.

Q. What would you say is your number 1 long term goal?

A. To turn professional and ride the Tour de France

And finally...

Q. If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

A To be able to teleport, so I don't have to fly.
