Cavendish strikes again for a sentimental victory

July 8, 2011, 3:46pm

Britain's Mark Cavendish has claimed his seventeenth Tour de France stage today in a bunch sprint at Chateauroux. Cavendish clinched the win on the same finish that he took his first ever Tour de France stage back in 2008. Second was Italy's Alessandro Petacchi and third, Andre Greipel of Germany.

"It's a very special day for me, it was here where I won my first stage and so it's a very sentimental moment," Cavendish said, "I have to thank the guys for all their work today, it was a hard windy day, and the guys rode hard for me all the way through. They were marvellous."

"The Tour is the biggest race, I love it more than any other, and I really wanted to do the same today as I did three years ago."

"It was an amazing leadout, I didn't have to do anything and I'm really proud of them all."

Cavendish has now taken twenty-seven Grand Tour stage wins, including two stages of the Giro d'Italia in 2011, as well as sixty-eight wins on the road since turning pro in 2007. Cavendish has taken a total of four Tour stage wins in 2008, six in 2009, five in 2010 and two in 2011. The HTC-Highroad men's squad has now racked up
 42 victories this season alone.

Tour de France Stage 5: Dangerous Day

Cadel Evans avoided a number of crashes that took down several overall contenders at the Tour de France Wednesday as the BMC Racing Team's leader held onto his second place overall.

Stayed In Front

Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank-Sungard), Bradley Wiggins (Sky Pro Cycling) and Robert Gesink (Rabobank) each crashed, but all were able to get up and continue. Evans finished 11th as Mark Cavendish (HTC-Highroad) won the uphill bunch sprint finish on the 164.5-kilometer stage. "It was really windy, with narrow, winding roads," Evans said. "We worked hard to stay in front all day. I just kept hearing on the radio over and over again, 'crash, crash, crash' and sort of kept going, and then I saw Gesink all covered in dirt. It was a dangerous day."

crash, tour de france, stage 5Good Guidance

Evans remains one second behind yellow jersey wearer Thor Hushovd (Garmin-Cervélo) heading into the longest stage (226.5 km) of this year's race. The two-time Tour de France runner-up said he's appreciating the fine teamwork he has received, particularly from Manuel Quinziato and Marcus Burghardt. "They're used to riding the classics and riding in the front all day, and dodging traffic islands is their speciality," Evans said. "I'm very grateful to have them here for that as well as their role in the team."

Giro Stage 12: Cavendish stomps home for win

May 19, 2011, 8:22pm

Stage 12 of the Giro d’Italia was taken out in exemplary style yesterday, with Mark Cavendish stomping home for the win – almost a bike length ahead of closest rival, Davide Apollonio from Team Sky. The 184km stage from Castelfirdado to Ravenna was hotly contested by an aggressive peloton, but HTC Highroad kept their cool for the entire stage, with the end result placing Cavendish over the line first.

The manxman’s team entered the final 2km on the front of the peloton, as they had been for the majority of the stage – but a small crash almost took down the entire HTC Highroad team, as they entered one of the first corners of the township of Ravenna. A rider from Androni Cycling Team misjudged a sharp left hand turn, and cut in front of the Cavendish leadout, and into the barriers. This set off a chain reaction, with several big names including Robbie Hunter hitting the tarmac.

The peloton continued in to the village, with the familiar colours of HTC Highroad stringing out off the front of the field, which had now been reduced to less than 30 riders after the aforementioned pile-up. This still did not reduce the risk of HTC losing their stage win, with “every team coming to the front to fight for the finale”.

Hitting the final kilometre, and it was Lars Bak who continued the ruthless pace of the HTC Highroad leadout – followed directly behind by Mark Renshaw, who took over the controls with 500m to go. Renshaw again increased the pace until the 200m indicator, where Cavendish began to make his move. Anticipating a response by Italian stallion Pettachi, Mark Cavendish hit the gas early, leaving his biggest concern behind…

However, it was Sky Pro Team rider, Davide Apollonio who stealthily charged across from Pettachi’s wheel, and up behind Cavendish who was 80m from the line. Apollonio had tried to run up the right hand side of the stage winner, but faded against the raw power of Cavendish who at this point already had his hands aloft. The tally of wins for Cavendish is at two for now, but he has hopes of bettering that in the coming stages…

TDU - 72 hours to go to Stage 1......What’s happening

72 hours to go to Stage 1......What’s happening

By Simon Cadzow

“...It’s Lances last race, possibly Stuey’s last race, Robbies last race...”

“If I get one more question about Andre Greipel this will be my last race.”

Mark Cavendish Santos Tour Down Under 2011

mark cavendishBlunt. Thank God his racing isn’t. Although truth be told I’m fully supportive of Cav’s comment. He and Andre haven’t even raced against each other so to state there is a rivalry at this year’s Tour Down Under is just absurd!

That said he’s here to race.

...So are a lot of other people; a lot of very, very good people.

One look at the start lists for the teams assembled tells quite a story.

The veterans: Stuey, Alby, Brownie, Eisel, Rogers, Gerrans, Robbie, some guy called Lance, and the list goes on and on.

The new guys on the block: Cav, Renshaw, Goss – and these guys are all on the same team, Bobridge, Farrar, Meyer, Parker, Roe, and Matthews and yep the list goes on and on.

Teams began rolling in over a week ago. Everyone coming from different parts of the world, different temperatures, different conditions ranging from -6 degrees in Belgium for the HTC mechanics to Lance’s 25% incline climbs(OMG my car won’t make it up that) in Hawaii.

lance armstrongThey’re all here for the first race on the UCI Pro Tour calendar. And everyone wants to do something.

“We’ve never had sprinters before on our teams so this is a real thing for us. Obviously we want to win a stage.”             Lance Armstrong Radioshack Domestique

“Teams objectives are simple: win stages and go for the overall” Mark Cavendish HTC Sprinter

“UCI points are the focus. I don’t think anyone else thinks of that but this is so important for so many reasons. One is simply to ensure that we get the team car into the right position in the convoy for the year ahead.”            Mike Sayers BMC manager

Teams have sent strong riders to the Tour Down Under. There are no less than 10 teams with top sprinters capable of winning stages.

“I’d love to win again at the Tour Down Under,” said Simon Gerrans of a very impressive Team Sky, “But it’s so much harder now. Teams are preparing earlier, sending strong units of guys. The season starts now and everyone is gunning for it.”

Everyone is saying it. Just like in years before, it’s a sprinters race.

2011 sees the best sprinters in the world all here and yes, Cav’s presence seals it.

The lead out trains are on the roads practising and everyone is looking forward to the business of racing.

Twitter rides are bringing things even closer to the public courtesy of you-know-who. And Adelaide is the place for things to happen. You can walk out onto the street and someone will ride past.

Lance sums it up.

“Why here? Well the race is safe. The weather is great. The organisation is fantastic. You’re in one hotel. Riders are respected.” Notice he didn’t mention that it’s the first Pro Tour race for the year....”Races in Europe with great cycling history are disappearing and here things are thriving. That says a lot.”

Riders want to be here...and they are. Get ready. 72 hours to go. And by the way, Cav says the girls here are friendly.

Pegasus Sports loses financial backing

December 12, 2010, 9:28pm

13-Dec-2010 - Brisbane: Tuesday, December 7, 2010, Pegasus Sports was notified by its principal financial backer that financial support for the Pegasus Sports Professional Cycling project had been retracted. As a result of these changed circumstances, Pegasus Sports was not issued a Professional Continental license by the UCI Licensing Commission as expected on Friday, December 10, 2010. The UCI Licensing Commission has granted the Pegasus Sports' licence application an extension until Wednesday, December 15, 2010.

Pegasus Sports is currently working with a number of parties to secure the necessary funding to guarantee the project's future and ensure the UCI's requirements for a Professional Continental license are met in accordance with the UCI's revised timeline.

"The current reports by some media outlets that the Team has folded are not correct. Pegasus Sports CEO Chris White said. "I have not spoken to any of these media outlets and what is being currently reported is false and most detrimental to a very exciting project. All people associated with the Team are aware of the true circumstances and we continue to work towards meeting the UCI deadline."
