Martin takes out time trial, Froome takes lead

August 29, 2011, 4:12pm

STAGE RESULT

1. Tony Martin  - HTC–Highroad (55m 54s)

2. Chris Froome  - Team Sky (+59s)

3. Bradley Wiggins - Team Sky (+1m22s)

OVERALL STANDINGS

1. Chris Froome - Team Sky (38h 09m 13s)

2. Jakob Fuglsang - Leopard Trek (+12s)

3. Bradley Wiggins - Team Sky (+20s)

Team Sky's Chris Froome produced the time trial performance of his life to take the leader's red jersey at the Vuelta a Espana.

The Kenyan-born Briton finished second on the stage behind Tony Martin (HTC-Highroad) in the 47 kilometres time trial around Salamanca and it was good enough to see him vault up from 14th to top of the overall standings.

He leads by 12 seconds from Jakob Fuglsang (Leopard-Trek), with Team Sky team-mate Bradley Wiggins third on the day and up to third overall, 20 seconds behind Froome.

Chris Froome, Team Sky Rider:

"It’s not really sunk in yet, it’s still a bit unreal. I didn’t expect to do that today. I thought maybe I’d try and stay in contention or at least be up there close to Bradley but never expected this.

"I'm over the moon, I think I just had a fantastic day and somehow I've ended up in the leader's jersey - it's a dream come true.

"I think it was the updates from Sports Director Marcus Ljungqvist on the radio which kept me going. To be honest I felt pretty rough out there; I was hurting from yesterday’s effort and just felt like I wasn’t really going that fast.

"What really helped was Marcus in the team car edging me on, saying ‘you’re doing great’, ‘you’ve got a really good time’, ‘just keep going like you are’ and so on. It was fantastic to have that information and encouragement – at least I knew I wasn’t doing too badly!

On the race as a whole, Froome added: "It’s gone really well, we’ve just been trying to limit Brad’s losses every day and try and keep him in contention until the time trial.

"It went especially well yesterday on stage nine which was also a bit of a surprise because we hadn’t planned to try and make a difference like that. We went into the stage just trying to keep as close to other GC guys as possible but when we got into the crosswinds up on the mountain with about 4k to go we were in the perfect position to put the hammer down and really go. We just did it naturally and it worked out.

"The other riders have been doing a brilliant job looking after us until the final and the staff have been really, really supportive. It’s been great - the environment and atmosphere in the team is just fantastic."

Steven de Jongh, Team Sky Sports Director:

"It was a really good performance from Froomey of course and also Bradley.

"Apart from Tony Martin they put time on absolutely everyone else, including all the other GC contenders, so we’re really happy with the result.

"It was a big surprise that Froomey beat Bradley but I’d say he did the time trial of his life today.

"We must also not forget that Bradley broke his collarbone at the Tour de France and had an operation so it’s amazing to be performing at this level so soon afterwards. He's been great throughout the race and it was another tremendous effort from him today."

BMC Racing Team Signs Philippe Gilbert

August 19, 2011, 4:22pm

Belgian national road and time trial champion Philippe Gilbert will join the BMC Racing Team for the 2012 season, further bolstering a roster that will include the reigning Tour de France champion and a number of past world road champions.

Will Play Several Roles
BMC Racing Team President/General Manager Jim Ochowicz said Gilbert – currently UCI world-ranked No. 2 to future teammate Cadel Evans – is a gifted athlete who brings an immense amount of talent to the team. "He will act as one of our leaders during the classics and other races throughout the season," Ochowicz said. "His power and tenacity will play a big role in support of Cadel's defense of his Tour de France title. Additionally, his experience will be shared in a mentorship role to the younger riders on the team like Taylor Phinney and Greg Van Avermaet as they continue to develop their skills in the classics." Details of Gilbert's three-year contract are not being disclosed.

Clear Objectives
Already this season, Gilbert has won more than a dozen races, including the first stage of the Tour de France and a host of one-day classics, including Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Flèche Wallonne, Amstel Gold and Clasica San Sebastian. What attracted him to the BMC Racing Team, he said, was its early interest – before he started winning. "They were interested in me from the beginning," Gilbert said. "Plus, I know the team well. They are well-organized, very professional and a close group." Gilbert said he is most looking forward to helping at the Tour de France, which starts next year in his home country. "My objectives are clear: to go for the one-day classics and then go to the Tour to learn and help Cadel," he said. "Next year with the start in Liege, it's close to my home. So I will try to win a stage and then help Cadel win the Tour."

Evans Excited
Evans said he is excited by the prospect of having a former teammate help him make a run at a second straight Tour de France title. "I'm happy to be back with one of my old teammates," Evans said. "We've always remained friends, but now we get to be teammates again and that's fantastic," Evans said. "I suspect I'll be a domestique in the Ardennes week, but I look forward to it and it will be a pleasure." Joining Gilbert on the BMC Racing Team next year will be reigning world road champion Thor Hushovd, whose signing was announced last week.

Team RadioShack Motivated for Spain and Colorado

August 18, 2011, 4:39pm
18 August 2011 –  Three of the four Team RadioShack leaders who were hit by crashes and bad luck during the Tour de France last month are back on the bike and ready to win again.  Jani Brajkovic and Andreas Klöden will start on Saturday as the leaders of Team RadioShack in the 66th Tour of Spain. In the USA, Levi Leipheimer aims to win the USA Pro Cycling Challenge (Tour of Colorado).  The 2011 Tour of California champion Chris Horner is still recovering from his race-ending crash in the Tour de France and is not yet able to race.

“During the Tour de France our fans all knew that crashes got the best of us,” said  Manager Johan Bruyneel.  “One month later only the names of the winners stay in their minds.  But part three of the cycling season starts now and it’s time for us to show our real value again and to show the Team RadioShack jerseys on the podiums. Levi, Andreas and Jani have recovered from their injuries. They are ready to show how they could have performed in July. Cycling is not an exact science. Being in the condition of your life in July doesn’t mean you will have the same form one month later. The courses are different and the other riders are different. However I am confident we can surprise again. The results of the last few weeks in Wallonie, Eneco Tour and Utah make me optimistic.”

Andreas Klöden and Jani Brajkovic start as the leaders in Benidorm on Saturday. “Andreas is one of the most professional riders I have ever worked with,” continued Bruyneel. “In 2011 he was never sick and he was really ready for maybe his best Tour de France ever. If his back injury doesn’t flare up again, he should be able to place very high in Madrid. Together with Jani, who showed good form last week in the Tour of Utah, he can be part of a dangerous duo. And don’t forget Tiago Machado. Tiago learned a lot in the Tour of Italy this year. It was a very hard Giro. Maybe a bit too hard for being his first Grand Tour, but he recovered well. Now he has no pressure on his shoulders. On the contrary, he can be the perfect team player and look for some opportunities in the mountains.”

American US Pro champion Matthew Busche will start in his first Grand Tour in Spain and will be absent from the USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Colorado.  Levi Leipheimer will be there as the leader of Team RadioShack and also one of the favorites.

“The characteristics of the race suit Levi well, but the competition will be very hard in this new Tour of Colorado. Cadel Evans, Frank and Andy Schleck, Robert Gesink and Tom Danielson will all be motivated too. It’s going to be an interesting month of September.  I look forward to it. It would be nice to offer RadioShack, Nissan, our other sponsors and all the fans an extra victory as a thank you for the trust they have had in us,” concluded Bruyneel.

The team line-up for the next races:

Tour of Spain, 20/08-11/09/11

Rider quotes from stage 10

July 12, 2011, 2:34pm

Dries Devenyns
"When Gilbert got moving on the last climb I followed him with determination. We got a good lead, but in the lead group not everyone was collaborating. Tony Martin clearly wasn’t cooperating in order to favour Cavendish’s sprint. So I preferred not to force things. In these situations it’s also important to understand if a move will be successful or not. I’m happy, anyway. My legs are spinning really well, even after the rest day. We’ll see in the next few days if there will be any other chances.”

Jerome Pineau Jerome Pineau
Jerome Pineau was involved in a crash that happened about 10 kilometres after the start of the stage. “I couldn’t do anything to avoid the fall. It’s never fun to wipe out, but luckily the consequences weren’t too serious. I just have some scrapes on my left side and knee, but they shouldn’t be a problem.”

Sylvain Chavanel
"Today I finished in the first group. It was hard for me, but the rest day surely helped me a lot. At the moment I still don’t have the energy I need to attack, but I’m hoping that in the next days I won’t have any more troubles and maybe I can try to needle my way ahead of the group.”

Kevin De Weert
"Again today the day went by without problems or falls. I tried to stay out in front to avoid surprises, and also because often after the rest day the legs might not be super.”

It was a hard day for Gerald Ciolek. The team’s German sprinter is suffering from a pimple that makes it uncomfortable for him to stay on his saddle. Gert Steegmans is still experiencing pain in his left wrist; he finished the stage in 149th place at 5.59` from the winner
