BMC Racing Team's Cadel Evans Makes Tour de France History

Cadel Evans of the BMC Racing Team confirmed his place in Tour de France history Sunday by becoming the first Australian to win the world's greatest bicycle race.

'We Did It'

After crossing the finish line in Paris, Evans was swarmed by all eight of his teammates who completed the three-week, 3,430-kilometer race. Thirty years after fellow Australian Phil Anderson first wore the yellow jersey, Evans celebrated his first win in seven Tour de France appearances. "A few people always believed in me," Evans said. "I believed in me. And those few people and my team and the few people around me and myself are what matter most. We did it. I also have to thank all our fans, especially those who stayed up late to watch in Australia." Mark Cavendish (HTC-Highroad) won the final stage on the Champs Élysées in Paris.

Time Trial Was The Highlight

Evans took the lead on the penultimate day by overcoming a 57-second deficit to Andy Schleck (Leopard Trek) in the 42 km individual time trial in Grenoble. Schleck finished second overall, 1:34 behind Evans's winning time of 86 hours, 12 minutes and 22 seconds. "For me personally, the real highlight of it all was the last three or four kilometers of the time trial," Evans said. "The hardest part had been done until that point and coming into that finish I knew we were on the right track so that was just incredible. For once the last four km of a time trial wasn't that hard."

Hincapie Makes History

With Evans's victory, George Hincapie extended his record run of being part of nine Tour de France winning teams. "I told the guys before the start today to soak up every moment, every bump, every corner, every sound you hear because it's special and something you will remember the rest of your life," Hincapie said. "From the chaos of the first week to the challenges we had during the mountains to the different tactical approaches the other teams were taking to the dramatic time trial at the end – it was all very special." Hincapie previously rode with Tour de France champions Lance Armstrong (1999-2005) and Alberto Contador (2007) and has participated in a record-tying 16 Tours de France.

Regains No. 1 Ranking

By winning three of five stage races he has started this season, Evans regained the UCI WorldTour No. 1 ranking he briefly held after winning Tirreno-Adriatico. He also won the Tour de Romandie and was runner-up at the Critérium du Dauphiné. His Tour win also elevates the BMC Racing Team to No. 2 (behind Leopard Trek) in the team classification of the UCI WorldTour rankings. Joining him on the Tour de France team were Brent Bookwalter (USA), Marcus Burghardt (GER), Hincapie (USA), Amaël Moinard (FRA), Steve Morabito (SUI), Manuel Quinziato (ITA), Ivan Santaromita (ITA) and Michael Schär (SUI). BMC Racing Team Directeur Sportif John Lelangue was assisted in the race by Assistant Director Fabio Baldato.

Great Satisfaction

The BMC Racing captures its first Tour de France title in only its second appearance in the race. Co-Owner Andy Rihs said the organization put all of its effort into surrounding Evans with the best people and resources he needed to win his first Tour de France. "I'm extremely delighted, as is the whole team, but the happiest man on the planet must be Cadel," Rihs said. "It's a great satisfaction to finally have this dream come true. Cadel had potential and he showed it. He fought every day and it's a historic effort for him and the whole BMC Racing Team."

Evan's shows what he is made of but still loses time

Australian Cadel Evans was puzzled and annoyed by the time lost by most Tour de France favorites during the 18th stage on Thursday.

"It seems like the Schleck brothers had the best climbing team, in combination. They put it all on the line and they really had to do a long-range attack," the 2009 world champion said after finishing third in the stage behind Andy and Frank Schleck.

Andy Schleck attacked 60 kilometers from the line and no team really took control of the chase, thinking he would tire or hoping others would do the work.

"Just on a numbers basis, with 20 to 30 kph block headwind up a valley, we are in a group of 40 with one to nine guys riding at the front, and they are in a group of four riding at the front. They really rode fast at the front, I don't quite understand how they made so much time," said Evans.

Andy Schleck, helped by team mate Maxime Monfort and two early escapees, doubled his lead between the top of the Izoard pass and the foot of the Galibier on flat terrain which should have favored the chasers.

"Euskaltel had the most riders there at one point with four guys and they were riding with three or others, but still losing time," Evans said. "I had to put it on the line, but it was my Tour to win and mine to lose.

"It's also a bit bizarre when (Tour leader Thomas) Voeckler's team stops riding and he has the yellow jersey. They've ridden a lot all week, but he still had a team mate in the end and just sort of looked at me to do the work," he said.

The Australian, Tour runner-up in 2007 and 2008, took the chase into his own hands in the finale, climbing most of the last ascent on his own with the other favorites on his heels.

He probably was the fastest man on the Galibier, a performance that earned him praise from three-times Tour champion Alberto Contador, whom he dropped in the final kilometer.

"He did an incredible job and really showed what he's made of," the Spaniard said.

Harder Than Anticipated for Cadel Evans and BMC

July 17, 2011, 2:54pm

The BMC Racing Team worked hard Sunday to keep Cadel Evans safely positioned on a windy, fast stage at the Tour de France.

'Today Was Brutal'
George Hincapie said the 193 kilometer race presented more challenges than anticipated. "Today was brutal," the three-time U.S. national road champion said. "For a transition day, it was harder than a lot of the mountain stages we've done. It was full-on, all day, fighting for position. You couldn't let your guard down for one second. The team did an awesome job of riding together all day." Mark Cavendish (HTC-Highroad) took the bunch sprint as Thomas Voeckler (Team Europcar) kept the overall lead and Evans remained third.

Staying Near The Front
Evans said a strong tailwind made the race "really risky" and imperative to stay near the front, particularly near the finish. "It's a sort of a conflict in the race where the sprinters want to be in the first position, but we have to be in the front and sometimes we have to be in their way at 10 or five kilometers to go," Evans said. "Of course they don't like that, but we can lose the race at five kilometers because we have to at least be at three kilometers if something happens in the peloton." Monday marks the second rest day of the three-week race.

Sanchez takes win; Voeckler in yellow once again; Stage 9

July 10, 2011, 3:38pm

SAINT-FLOUR, France — Spanish rider Luis Leon Sanchez has won Sunday's ninth stage of the Tour de France after a long breakaway in the mountains.

Frenchman Thomas Voeckler, the French national champion, finished second and took the yellow jersey from Thor Hushovd of Norway. Voeckler is no stranger to yellow, after wearing it for 10 days in 2004.

Veteran Kazakh rider Alexandre Vinokourov withdrew from the race after crashing near the halfway point of the 129.2-mile trek from Issoire to Saint-Flour in the Massif Central. It was Vino’s final tour and marks a sad way to end his controversial but illustrious and entertaining career.

Spanish rider Juan Antonio Flecha was hit by a car late in the stage and took down Dutch rider Johnny Hoogerland with him as he flew sideways off his saddle. Both got up and continued to race.

Defending champion Alberto Contador fell early on, but the Spaniard was unharmed and rode on.

Team Sky rider Juan Antonio Flecha was struck by a car late in Sunday's ninth stage of the Tour de France, sending the Spaniard flying into Dutch cyclist Johnny Hoogerland and bringing them both down.

Flecha had cuts to his legs and arms but got back on his bike. Hoogerland also remounted his bike and continued racing.

The Tour car was parallel to Flecha before, the driver seemingly misjudging how close it was to the Spaniard and turning into him. He was knocked from his saddle and collided with Hoogerland, who flew into a ditch.

The 33-year-old Flecha's jersey was shredded on the back and blood dripped from his knee and elbow. Despite the heavy fall, he rode at a decent pace upon resuming racing.

By sheer luck, Hoogerland escaped a potentially horrific injury as he was sent flying narrowly over a barbed wire fence.

The pair had been in the breakaway group when the incident happened, but they were soon caught by the peloton.  The extent of their injuries is still unknown.

Cavendish strikes again for a sentimental victory

Britain's Mark Cavendish has claimed his seventeenth Tour de France stage today in a bunch sprint at Chateauroux. Cavendish clinched the win on the same finish that he took his first ever Tour de France stage back in 2008. Second was Italy's Alessandro Petacchi and third, Andre Greipel of Germany.

"It's a very special day for me, it was here where I won my first stage and so it's a very sentimental moment," Cavendish said, "I have to thank the guys for all their work today, it was a hard windy day, and the guys rode hard for me all the way through. They were marvellous."

"The Tour is the biggest race, I love it more than any other, and I really wanted to do the same today as I did three years ago."

"It was an amazing leadout, I didn't have to do anything and I'm really proud of them all."

Cavendish has now taken twenty-seven Grand Tour stage wins, including two stages of the Giro d'Italia in 2011, as well as sixty-eight wins on the road since turning pro in 2007. Cavendish has taken a total of four Tour stage wins in 2008, six in 2009, five in 2010 and two in 2011. The HTC-Highroad men's squad has now racked up
 42 victories this season alone.

Boasson Hagen flies to victory: stage 6

July 7, 2011, 3:39pm

  Stage 6 – Dinan to Lisieux, 226.5km

RESULTS

1 - Edvald Boasson Hagen - Team Sky -
(5h 13m 37s)

2 - Matthew Goss (AUS) - HTC - Highroad - (same time)

3 - Thor Hushovd (NOR) - Garmin - (same time)

Norway’s Edvald Boasson Hagen today claimed his and Team Sky's first Tour de France stage success by winning the longest stage of the race in a bunch finish in Lisieux.

Edvald Boasson Hagen, Team Sky Rider:

"I felt really good today and I'm so pleased to win the sprint. Geraint Thomas did a great lead out and it's just fantastic it's all worked out.

"I was feeling strong and I knew from yesterday that I had the legs so the chance was there - I'm so glad we were able to take it.

"It's hard to describe the emotions, I'm just so happy. To get my first stage at the Tour de France is so special. It means so much to the team as a whole because this is the biggest race in the world. It's gone well for us so far and will hopefully continue to do so as we work for Bradley (Wiggins) in the general classification."

Dave Brailsford, Team Sky Team Principal:

“It’s a big day and a super-exciting moment for the whole team – the riders, the staff, our partners and all our fans.  This first Grand Tour stage win is also a key moment in our development and our history.

“Who better to get it than Edvald who’s been such a great rider for this team. It’s onwards and upwards from here but I think we should take a moment to savour it now and really take on board what we’ve achieved. We’re still a young team and to accomplish this in such a short space of time is very exciting and we’ll look forward to building on that now.

“We’ll have a glass of champagne to toast Edvald’s victory tonight but there will be no wild celebrations – we’ll save those until Paris. We just have to enjoy the moment now though because every member of this team has worked so hard to get us where we are today.”

Sean Yates, Team Sky Sports Director:

"It was a fantastic finish with Edvald taking the win. We’ve always known he is a great talent - he’s had a lot of bad luck over the last 18 months but today everything came together for him and the rest of the team.

"It’s fantastic, we’ve been there or thereabouts every day, and although it’s not the icing on the cake, it is the layer right underneath that! The icing on the cake is hopefully still to come but yes, this is a great win for the team.

"We’ve had good morale all Tour, even though we hadn’t won until today. We came close in the TTT and also close to the yellow jersey.  Edvald also came close to the stage win yesterday but hit out too early, and he wasn’t going to make that same mistake again.

"It all came right today, the finish worked to Edvald’s advantage because that hill in the final kilometre got rid of the purer sprinters like Cav – who on a flat finish is virtually unbeatable. The way G and the rest of the team guided Edvald was top-notch and then the stage was made for him really. That was a great performance and a great day for the team."
