Andreas Klöden forced to abandon the Tour de France

July 15, 2011, 3:54pm
15 July 2011 -  Due to multiple contusions, Team RadioShack's Andreas Klöden was forced to abandon in Friday's 13th stage of the Tour de France.  Klöden was involved in the terrible crash in the descent of the Col du Pas de Peyrol in last Sunday's stage 9, after which a muscle contracture and hematomas in the lower back were diagnosed.  Yesterday's crash on the Hourquette d'Ancizan aggravated the situation.

"This morning before the start I was really motivated to give it a try," said Klöden. "As I was not concerned any more on my general classification, I hoped to do it easy today and tomorrow to give my body the opportunity to recover, having in mind to try to win a stage in the last week of the Tour de France. Immediately after the start  I felt it was impossible to go on. The speed was very high and I was not able to get power out of my legs. It is a pity, my condition was and is still very good, but there is nothing you can do against bad luck. Twice I crashed because other riders in front of me took too many risks."

Andreas Klöden came to the Tour as one of four leaders for Team RadioShack but the team is now down to one, Levi Leipheimer, who is currently 7:51 down in 17th place. Leipheimer was already involved in four crashes this race. Jani Brajkovic had to leave the Tour after suffering a concussion and broken collarbone in the fifth stage and teammate Chris Horner was forced to abandon with a concussion and broken nose after stage eight. Moreover Yaroslav Popovych did not start the 10th stage due to a fever.

"With our GC and Team GC hopes gone, our only option now is to look for stage win opportunities," said Team Manager Johan Bruyneel.  "Of course with so many injured riders, this won't be an easy task, but we will try. At this point, the only thing I can promise you is this - we will continue riding. Even if we are left with one rider, we will continue. These experiences have made me reflect on what we were able to accomplish for 9 Tours de France.  It has allowed me to see the Tour in a new light; a light that I don't particularly want to see again, but a light that has brought a new respect and appreciation for the race and riders."

Andreas Klöden will return home to Switzerland tomorrow. On Monday he will undergo extra scans in the hospital of his pelvis, sacrum and lower back to exclude a bulging disc and hernia.  An earlier scan in the hospital in Saint-Flour on Sunday did not reveal any fractures.

"I feel very sad for me but also for the Team," concluded Andreas Klöden. "I had one of my best seasons so far. I was really ready for the final podium.  I will come back to the Tour de France."

Stage 13 Sky Update - Pau to Lourdes, 152.5km

July 15, 2011, 3:37pm

RESULTS
1. Thor Hushovd - Garmin-Cervelo    (3h 47min 36secs)
2. David Moncoutie - Cofidis    (+10)
3. Jeremy Roy - FDJ    (+26)

6. Edvald Boasson Hagen - Team Sky       (+5min 03secs)

Thor Hushovd attacked on the Col d'Aubisque before chasing down Jeremy Roy to take a memorable solo victory in Lourdes on stage 13 of the Tour de France. Edvald Boasson Hagen made the break and claimed sixth for Team Sky while Thomas Voeckler comfortably maintained the yellow jersey ahead of a pivotal mountain test on Saturday.

Simon Gerrans, Team Sky Rider:

"Today both myself and Edvald has been told to try and get in the breakaway because this was the first real stage where everyone expected it to survive until the finish. We did everything we could to get in the move and that meant covering as many attacks as possible until it got away.

"It was a really hard start to the day because every team had the same idea. There were constant attacks during the first 55km. Fortunately though Edvald had the legs just at the right time and was able to get in there.

"He gave it everything he had on the Col d'Aubisque but just couldn't stay with Thor Hushovd and Jeremy Roy when they made their move. You have to hand it to Thor today he rode an amazing ride and fully deserved his win.

"Once the break had gone it was just a matter of conserving my energy for the coming days and finishing inside the time limit. We all appreciated the chance to relax after a hard day yesterday."

Sean Yates, Team Sky Sports Director:

"Thor's on fire. He's the last person you would have thought would win the stage today. He was obviously feeing good when he jumped away at the bottom of the Aubisque but I doubt that when he was caught by Moncoutie that he dreamt he would end up winning.

"We had Edvald in the break. The start went so quick today that the break didn't end up gong instantly but we'd made our minds up that we wanted either him or Simon in the break and it took a lot of effort. So that took the edge off Edvald I think and compromised his chances.

"But it's either you gamble and try later or go. But if you miss the move then you're nowhere. It's just one of those things but Edvald did what he could.

"It was great team work by the guys to be across every single move but at the end of the day Thor was stronger. It's just one of those things.

"For everyone else it was just about keeping cool and out of trouble. That was always going to be the case for the GC men."

Evans confirms climbing form

Luz-Ardiden, France

alberto contadorTour de France, Stage 12: A Strong Finish

Cadel Evans of the BMC Racing Team confirmed his climbing form on the Tour de France's first major mountain stage by finishing fifth and gaining more time on several of the overall contenders.

Following Attacks

Following an attack by Frank Schleck in the final kilometers of the climb to Luz-Ardiden, Evans was among a select chase group that included Ivan Basso, Andy Schleck, Alberto Contador and Damiano Cunego. "The first real mountain top finish in the Tour there's always something you don't expect and something you do expect," Evans said. "It's still early in the mountains and it's a long way to Paris. If the team just keeps going as it has done every day so far, we'll really put ourselves in a great position and get ourselves in a great position in Paris."

Gaining Time

Olympic champion Samuel Sánchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) rode away from Jelle Vanendert (Omega Pharma-Lotto) to take the stage win, while Frank Schleck (Team Leopard Trek) was third. Evans comfortably followed Basso home as defending Tour champion Contador (Saxo Bank Sungard) conceded 13 seconds. Thomas Voeckler (Team Europcar) finished 20 seconds behind Evans to keep the yellow jersey with a 1:49 advantage over Frank Schleck and 2:06 over Evans in third. "You're never particularly comfortable in the Tour at any moment, right now included," Evans said. "We just have to stay calm for now and see how things go in the coming days."

Team Sky Update: Stage 12 - Cugnaux to Luz-Ardiden

July 14, 2011, 3:19pm

Samuel Sánchez climbed to victory on the 12th stage but reigning champion Alberto Contador's yellow jersey hopes suffered another blow as the Tour de France hit the high mountains for the first time this year. For Team Sky, Geraint Thomas won the day's combativity prize with a superb breakaway performance while Rigoberto Urán moved into the top 20 on the general classification.

Geraint Thomas, Team Sky Rider:

"I was feeling good and the buzz from the crowd helped a lot as well. We're missing Brad (Wiggins) and wanted to get stuck into the race. We got out there and gave it a good bash. It's just great to be up the front racing on a day like today - it was a great day out.

"I found myself going a bit too hard (up the Tourmalet), I had to back off a bit because I wanted to be able to get up this (Luz-Ardiden) as well.

"We only had about two and a half minutes at the bottom of the final climb so I didn't really fancy my chances to be honest but I kept plugging away and kept on trying. I thought that being caught with seven kilometres to go wasn't too bad but it seemed as though there was another half hour of pedalling after that!

"Everyone is going really well though; morale and confidence is good in the team."

Sean Yates, Team Sky Sports Director:

"G did a great ride today. The plan was to either get him or Edvald (Boasson Hagen) in the break today. If you look at the history book this is a stage where riders have often stayed away from a long break.

"The fact that G was only four or five minutes down on GC didn't really help him. They might have given him more rope if he'd been a couple more minutes down.

"But he got lots of TV time and was right up there until the closing stages so it was a great ride by him.

"Rigoberto held his own well today. There's a long way to go until Paris and there is a lot more climbing to do. It was all about seeing where he was and obviously he has recovered from that injury he picked up in the crash with Bradley. So he is on track for a good GC place.

"Tomorrow is a transitional stage but we'll see how he gets on on the Plateau de Beille which is the next big one."

"Real Tour Starts Tomorrow" knows Evans

Tour de France, Stage 11: 'Real Tour Starts Tomorrow'

cadel evansFollowing a finish in a torrential downpour Wednesday, Cadel Evans and the BMC Racing Team are looking ahead to the first big day in the mountains of this year's Tour de France. "For us, the real Tour starts tomorrow," Evans said.

No Changes Overall
Evans finished 50th, but in the same time as sprint finish winner Mark Cavendish (HTC-Highroad), while Thomas Voeckler (Team Europcar) held onto the race lead. The challenge on Wednesday's 167.5-kilometer stage was staying upright and out of danger, BMC Racing Team's Michael Schär said. "It was really incredible. There were so much rain," he said. "I don't think I've ever done the last 10 or 15 kilometers with so much rain. You couldn't see anything. I was expecting a crash in every moment, but we were lucky."

Into The Mountains
Thursday's stage will feature three climbs, including the ascent of Luz-Ardiden at the finish. "It's 211 kilometers long and it's pretty hard," Evans said. "The first stage in the mountains of any Grand Tour is always a bit of something where someone has a bad day and someone has an extraordinarily good day. It is always some degree of an indicator. I just make my own race and see how the others go and hopefully I'll be competitive – or better."

Brutal Stages Coming; Evans well positioned

Tour de France, Stage 10: Back In The Saddle

cadel evansCadel Evans of the BMC Racing Team finished in the same time as the stage winner Tuesday as the overall standings remained unchanged following the first rest day of the Tour de France.

Nicer Roads

Andre Greipel (Omega Pharma-Lotte) beat Mark Cavendish (HTC-Highroad) in the sprint to win the 158-kilometer stage. Thomas Voeckler (Team Europcar) retained his lead and a 2:26 advantage over Evans, who is in third place. BMC Racing Team's Brent Bookwalter, one of several riders involved in a crash on a descent during Sunday's stage, said he appreciated the rest day. "My legs felt decent considering the first week we've had," he said. "My body still feels kind of beat up from the crash the other day. It was nice to come back with a slightly shorter stage, although it was a fast one. There were also nicer roads today, which was very welcome after being on so many goat paths for the first nine days."

Brutal Stages Coming

Wednesday marks the halfway point of the Tour in terms of stages, but not the midpoint as far as the selective kilometers, Bookwalter said. "The main selections or time gaps thus far have been from crashes and technical conditions," he said. "There are a lot of really brutal stages coming which are sure to shake up the GC (general classification) and really only one more day until those start," he said. "So far, we are still in a good position going into those days."
