Eneco Tour: Ovechkin on the penultimate stage podium

The good performances, for Team Katusha, in Eneco Tour go on: Artem Ovechkin reached the third position in the penultimate stage, obtaining the podium that yesterday Vladimir Isaychev, in the ITT stage, missed for a mere nothing. The stage, 189,2-kms-long around Genk, was characterized by a three-man-breakaway: Matteo Bono (Lampre), Sergey Renev (Astana) and Ovechkin himself left the group with around 100 kms to go, reaching a 3'30'' maximum gap. Despite the followers were almost able to catch them in the very final part, the three riders were able to anticipate the main group: Bono won the sprint, defeating Renev and Ovechkin. The main group reached the finishing line with a 6'' gap: Denis Galimzyanov, Team Katusha sprinter, was 6th. In general classification, Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky) keeps the leadership, while Vladimir Gusev moved to 9th position, 1'01'' far from the first place.

"We're satisfied with Ovechkin work today - explains the Sport Director Bart Leysen - the athlete was able to reach his first podium this year, staying in a more than 100 kms breakaway even if, in the final part of the course, the bad weather conditioned the race. Unfortunately, if he was a little more experienced, he could have also won this stage: Artem was in an escape with 2 faster riders at the final rush, so maybe he could have worked in a different way in order to take advantage over them. Instead, the stage was conditioned by the puncture, with 12 kms to go, by Andrè Greipel: when it happened, Omega Pharma-Lotto stopped to pull the group, so it was more difficult to reach the escapers in order to have a massive sprint final with Denis Galimzyanov as our leader. Tomorrow there will be the last, crucial stage. Our general classification rider, Vladimir Gusev, after a crash which penalized him during the first stages, is in a great shape: he will try to attack for sure, in order to gain some seconds over the riders ahead and closing this Eneco Tour in a good position".
