Bazzana electric in Athens; close to another win
Athens, GA, USA – Continuing his great run of form, Italian speedster Alessandro Bazzana has come up just short of winning the coveted Terrapin Twilight criterium.
With the backdrop of a solid day of rain and electrical storms, Athens was always going to be challenging. As always a great crowd was on hand to support the riders in their quest for success in the hotly contested ‘Speed Week’ criterium series.
Bazzana fresh off winning in Anniston Alabama last Sunday was the sole Fly V Australia rider represented in the break of 6 that escaped the clutches of the peloton at around the half way mark.
Coming into the final few laps riders in the break traded turns at attacking each other. It was United Health Care with two and a numerical advantage that took control ensuring that team sprinter Karl Menzies was protected.
In the end Bazzana was second to Menzies by the barest of margins coming up just short to take 2nd place and add to his 3rd and 1st places in Anniston just a week prior.
The Speed Week criterium series is a seven race series commencing with the Terrapin Twilight race on 24 April and concluding with the Global BMW Sandy Springs Criterium on 2 May.
